Orbit file timeout (March 2021)

Dear @ABraun,
while we are waiting for help from developers, I have an update about this issue.
Thinking of a possible problem with my study area, I have changed the location and I have downloaded another image from Copernicus hub.
This is the image S1A_IW_GRDH_1SDV_20210421T175740_20210421T175805_037552_046DBA_D391
(just in case you have time and you want to try by yourself the issue).
Now trying to “Apply Orbit file” using the gpt, it gives the same error as previously and no orbit file is downloaded in the designated folder
C:\Users\Salvatore.snap\auxdata\Orbits\Sentinel-1\RESORB\S1A\2021\04.

On the contrary, if I try to run the Apply Orbit file through the GUI of SNAP, it works and the previous folder is populated with these 2 files:

S1A_OPER_AUX_RESORB_OPOD_20210421T201237_V20210421T160518_20210421T192248.EOF (EOF file)
S1A_OPER_AUX_RESORB_OPOD_20210421T201237_V20210421T160518_20210421T192248.EOF (zip file)

So from my understanding, there is a problem with the gpt about the orbit file.
Moreover, if I use an older file (2018) related to the same scene, gpt works fine and in that case, I get a POERB orbit file, as you can see below:

Any suggestions and guidance are warmly welcomed.

snap2stamps is a user tool and was developed in 2018. SNAP evolved since then and things have changed, for example the location of SRTM 3Sec data and also the orbit files. SNAP was updated to adapt to these changes and both can be accessed. Yet it was reported, that especially processes started with gpt and from snappy have not integrated these changes, and accordingly, cannot access the new location of the orbit files. So we can fix this on the SNAP side but we can not provide support for external tools.

@jun_lu @lveci Please check why snappy and gpt cannot access the orbit files in so many cases.
@mengdahl Is there something else we can do about this? Quite some time has passed since March and, understandably, users become upset.

I installed snap v_6 again and replaced “snap.auxdata.properties” file of snap v_6 with snap v_8 “snap.auxdata.properties” file, In this way the problem was solved!

Thanks for getting into this, @ABraun. Would be really great to know, whether the issue with "No valid orbit file found" is on the Copernicus Open Access Hub or some error in SNAP’s logic, whether it will get fixed soon, or whether there could be any workaround.

As far as I can see, the issue must be in the GnssOrbitFileDownloader:

Which queries the Copernicus Open Access Hub API for GNSS data for the entire day of the target product date, and then loops through the results to see whether there is a match. There is none, though.

I don’t use snap v8, because scripts of the snap2stamps package dont run completely by this version of snap…so I use snap v6 and kubuntu18.04…It is worth mentioning using snap v8 due to orbit files time out connection problem for new SAR data set is an accepted solution…but since I don’t work with snap GUI and use scripts to perform analyses automatically, I have to use snap v6 and download orbit files manually for new SAR data

Ideally snap2stamps should be updated to support v8/v9. Older versions of SNAP are not supported and new features and bugfixes are missing.

I think I am in the same position as you (i.e. SNAP 6 allows splitting_slaves and coreg_ifg_topsar to complete, but stamps_export does not complete).

How do you manually download orbit files for use in snap2stamps?

I hope they had good reasons for all the changes to the Sentinel-1 orbit file access. It is causing a lot of pain for everybody.

Consulting this forum, is that there are images that as of February 2021 are no longer available, (that makes sense since the only images of all my analysis that gave me a problem are those from February, as seen in the message previous). What seems strange to me is that the second image ([35] Folder: 20210315) does manage to download the information and perform a correct analysis of it with snap2stamps.

What should i do to fix this problem?

That is just what this thread is about - orbit file download failing in GPT and snappy. There is a ticket on this in s1tbx dev: Orbit file timeout (March 2021)

These are mainly side-effects resulting from the migration of the S-1 PDGS to the cloud.

Well, this is a SNAP problem. SARScape is downloading orbits fine for like a month - so the files are available. I have been migrating the orbit files from SARscape to snap - giant pain by the way since Snap segregates the orbit files by satellite - year - month and then need to be zipped.

ESA did this transition poorly, but it seems to be done and SNAP should be able to address it.

It has been addressed in SNAP. snap2stamps is an external tool not maintained by ESA.

you can use this link for downloading orbit files for your data…
https://scihub.copernicus.eu/gnss/#/home

then move downloaded files into the folder associated with the same month of the year in this path:
/home/user/.snap/auxdata/Orbits/Sentinel-1/POEORB

RESORB files are no longer available via the GNSS hub. It appears to be only POEORB available via the API.
