Help on Sentinel File name convention

Hi all,

I am new to Sentinel and have noticed that I have downloaded 2 scenes from EarthExplorer with different file name convention. The files where downloaded from EarthExplorer.

The file names (after extracted):

  • S2B_MSIL1C_20180308T083759_N0206_R064_T34LDQ_20180308T122314.SAFE;
  • S2A_OPER_PRD_MSIL1C_PDMC_20160802T185255_R064_V20160731T090033_20160731T090033.SAFE;

I know I need an L1C scene with TOA reflectance data in order to run the sen2cor plugin over SNAP for atmospheric correction in order to obtain a corrected BOA reflectance file. Is this correct?

So my question is:

  • Which of this scenes is the L1C data?
  • If both are L1C, why the difference on nomenclature?
  • If just one of them is L1C… what about the other file?

Thank you in advance

Regards

Paulo

Both are L1C files. The nameing convention has changed in between. Sen2Cor can handle both, as far as I know.

Hi Paulo,

Both of your files are L1C. One is from S2A and one from S2B.

The nomenclature of Sentinel 2 products was changed to overcome the limitation on the number of characters in pathnames that is a ‘feature’ of Windows.

The filenaming convention changed as of the 6th of December, 2016. You can find more information here:
https://sentinel.esa.int/web/sentinel/user-guides/sentinel-2-msi/naming-convention

Sen2Cor works on both, for me.

Cheers
