How is gamma correction handled in RGB image view?

I have a question concerning gamma correction in the level adjustments window. As a default, its value is 1.0. If I understand correctly that dl units are linear, the image should look washed out (due to gamma mismatch of 1.0 linear vs 2.2 of my monitor), which is not the case. Is there any gamma correction happening anyway? Entering a value of 2.2 or its inverse 0.45 doesn’t look as right as default 1.0.
Can anybody explain what is happening here?
Also, how are default min/max level set? AFAIK these are stored in the product, but I have no clue how they are determined.
