Not Detected Sample use Sentinel-2

Hi everyone

I am new to remote sensing and am currently exploring it for research purposes. However, I am facing a challenge. The sample of a plastic bottle that I placed on the sea surface, measuring 7 x 3 meters, at the research location of Kodingareng Lompo Island, Makassar, Indonesia, between 17 July 2024 - 10 August 2024, is not visible in Sentinel-2 imagery. Additionally, when processing this data in the SNAP application using the Floating Debris Index (FDI) and Plastic Index (PI), the sample is not detected.

I would appreciate your assistance with this matter. Thank you

Your floating panel is too small to be clearly visible by a sensor with a 10x10m resolution.
Your panel might have some influence, but not strong enough. You need to go to higher resolution sensors like WorldView or something from planet or any other sensor with a resolution of 0.5m.

Thank you for answering my question it is very helpful.

yah, my floating panel was deliberately made smaller than 10 x 10 m to find out if Sentinel 2 is able to detect floating plastic smaller than 10 x 10 m because based on Themiscloeus’ reference, a floating panel made with a size of 3 x 10 m can be detected so it is suggested to make it smaller than that. Sorry if I don’t understand this yet, can I ask for the use of worldview and the planet is the same as copernicus downloading sentinel 2 data?

Thank you

WorldView data can be obtained from ESA. just follow the link above. For data from Planet and most other high-res data you need to pay for. Also, you need to check data availability for your region. Often high-res data is only available for specific sites.

Thank you for the response.

Is there another method I can use to detect my plastic panels with Sentinel-2?

Sorry, I don’t know.
But I searched a bit and found these two articles:

Maybe they provide you some helpful input.

Thank you very much, it helps me a lot

Nice Project! Maybe you want to look into “subpixel detection” if you not already did

Thank you, how can i see subpixel detection as you mean?
