I find that SNAP no longer seems to recognize “$1.band_1” as identifying a band in a separate product, needed for Landsat.

It is still working if you have multiple compatible products open in SNAP.:
If you have only one you don’t need it the additional index.
I just tried it with SNAP 5 and it wasn’t working there already.
I’m not sure if this ever worked.
However, it is a good suggestion. SNAP should be less picky here.
